While at Hulu I helped promote their growing library of original content (Chance with Hugh Laurie, Dimension 404 with Patton Oswalt, the Becoming Bond documentary about George Lazenby, writing in Triumph’s voice for some Election Watch 2016 social content) — but Dumb was absolutely a highlight. Those familiar with Big Brother magazine (“Jackass before Jackass”) will understand.
And if you aren’t familiar with Big Brother magazine, watch the movie! It’s funny and utterly depraved, and shows the deep cultural influence the magazine had (on Spike Jonze, early Vice editors, Tony Hawk, skaters, musicians, Jonah Hill, and countless others) way before its key players transitioned to making subscription videos and then, eventually, Jackass.
A few of us on the creative team got to watch an early cut of the documentary. Then we were tasked with brainstorming alternative titles (though they ended up going with the working title, Dumb, which is pitch-perfect tbh).
We also needed creative for the key art, poster, and the usual litany of social/digital pushes.
“FROM IDIOTS TO ICONS” fits perfectly and has the benefit of being true — they literally went from being (genius-level) idiots to being icons.
Enjoy the documentary, which premiered June 3 only on Hulu. (Unless you’re an easily offended idiot.)
